3MT @ UCF

The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition celebrates the exciting research conducted by graduate students at SUNY Oswego. This competition cultivates students’ academic, presentation, and communication skills. The competition supports students’ capacity to effectively explain their research in three minutes, in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience.
Today was UCF‘s first Three Minute Thesis (3MT) event. Ten graduate students were selected to present their theses to an audience in under 3 minutes. I have to admit, it was pretty cool. There’s so much that goes into a thesis/dissertation, and yet these young scientists were able to break them down appropriately. While pursuing a PhD, naturally everyone asks you what your direction is. I agree with the goals of this event that it is important to be able to communicate the key points/contributions in such an “elevator pitch.” I would like to attempt this myself next year…
