I got the urge to build a spice rack out of a discarded shipping crate today lol
My wife is coming home from vacation soon and I wanted to do something for her (cooking related). We’ve needed to organize our spice situation for a long time. I wanted our spices to be within reach and easy for us to actually read the labels. I’m sure I could have bought something online, but as you may know, I love reclaimed wood projects, and this one didn’t seem too difficult. So I first gathered all our spices to see what I was working with, and then picked up a random discarded shipping crate (thanks, Sky Craft!). I then did some “back of the envelope/napkin” calculations to figure out how I would utilize the crate wood easily (each slat is roughly 3.5″ in width). I then stripped some wood, removed the nails, cut the pieces, sanded, washed and dried the wood, and then assembled with a brads nail gun. By far, the hardest part was removing the rusted nails, many of which were bent or broke during removal. Because it was already dark by the time I washed the wood, I had to dry it in the oven at a low temperature lol (normally I would have used good ol’ fashion Florida sunlight).
It came out a bit bigger than I expected… but I think it will be convenient and doesn’t look too bad. Though I should probably finish it with some stain or something…
