This Thanksgiving I’m thankful to have a roof over my head. I’m thankful I wasn’t forced to grow up in poverty and have to beg for money on the side of the road with my parents. I’m thankful I’m not so mentally ill that I can’t function without help. And I’m most thankful for my family and friends that do help when I need it.
Today I helped clean up and reorganize the kitchen store room as well as prep gravy and desserts for Thanksgiving dinner at the Coalition for the Homeless. They were very appreciative and it felt great! It was also heartwarming to see all of the donations come in for Thanksgiving, some of which couldn’t be used today because there was so much coming in (but will be used throughout the week). I saw donations from 4 Rivers, Dunkin Donuts and mom and pop businesses giving what they could. This was in addition to the food items they already had prepared for today. There were also other random volunteers like myself and a group of Disney folks who came in specifically to help feed during dinner.
If interested in volunteering, it’s very easy to sign up at their website (after a brief background check). They have many volunteer opportunities of varying lengths of time – 1, 2, 4, 8 hour shifts, etc., and they desperately need volunteers throughout the year, not just on holidays.
